What hit me at 61

July 26, 2026

It’s in the middle of the night. I’m watching reels on Instagram. I’ve done this many, many times – not just at midnight, but for hours on end during the day.

It hit me just tonight.

My generation has been replaced by much younger ones in the world today.

I related to stuff all around. When I went shopping, eating out, just hanging out or out on a walk in the park.

I’ve seen this sight for some years now….they were part of my scene, an addition to it. But I – my generation – was a part of it.

Today I feel replaced – no longer am I part of the scene – the general scene. Today I form part of the senior citizen’s club. Very different from the everyday club.

Things I related to became part of a younger club. My club is used to highlight a senior’s issues, not regular everyday stuff.

This has been happening over time, but I notice it only today. Today I’m made aware of my age, my actual physical age.

Till recently, I said stuff like, “I dont feel a day older than 30” and actually thought and felt so. Not anymore. Even if I dont feel any older, the world around me has made me feel so.

While on the one hand I’m ignored by the younger generation – sales persons, waiters/waitresses pass me over for the younger person next to me, I’m actually respected and taken care of by others of that same younger generation  – a chair held out for me, an offer of a bottle of water on a hot, sunny day.

So here I am — a senior citizen who has quietly made way for the younger generation. Passed over at the counter, but handed a chair. Invisible in one scene, looked after in another. Maybe that’s not replacement after all. Maybe it’s just a different kind of belonging — one I didn’t apply for, and am still getting used to.
